Drought Relief At Last!

After suffering one of the driest years on record, the southwest has received near to above normal precipitation this winter and forecasters predict a wetter than normal March and April.  El Nino is getting the credit for the badly needed moisture, which should increase the flows within most streams in the region.  The snow pack will also help to fill reservoirs drawn down during the recent drought, providing better flows in the streams flowing out of them.

Of particular interest to customers of the Solitary Angler are the Culebra Creek below Sanchez Reservoir, the Rio Costilla below Costilla Reservoir and the Cimarron River below Eagle Nest Dam.  All will benefit from the snow pack and the resulting run-off and flows should be fine this year.  Sanchez Reservoir and Eagle Nest Lake have enough water for another year and with the run-off they receive this year they’ll be in good shape for a while.  Costilla Reservoir dried up last year but it should gain some volume this year with a good run-off.

Many of the storms have produced very wet snow, saturating the ground, which is good for replenishing aquifers but it will take about 3 normal years to bring the aquifers back to normal.  Most freestone streams in the region will be in pretty good shape through mid-summer, when our rain season usually starts, keeping flows and temperatures optimal throughout summer.

Further north into Colorado, Wyoming and Montana they are also doing better than they have the last few years but they’re still below normal, around 75% to 90% of normal most places.  They’re supposed to be wetter than normal the next couple of months and forecaster are predicting they will end up with a normal snow pack.  This is good because their drought has extended for several years.

All this moisture means that fishing should be much better in the west during the 2003 fishing season.  The fish will also be healthier and less stressed due to higher flows and cooler temperatures.  Hatches will be more consistent and prolific and there will be more water for trout to spawn in.  After the last couple of years it will be refreshing to have some good flowing streams with good hatches and feeding fish instead of warm trickling creeks with starving trout.  Call us today to book a trip on your favorite stream.

Culebra Creek Survives Drought!

Springing out of the bottom of Sanchez Reservoir in southern Colorado, the Culebra Creek is an angler’s dream-come-true.  Nestled against the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Culebra is a small tailwater winding its way through pastures and brush on working ranches in the lower San Luis Valley.  The reservoir was built by hand in the late 1800’s to provide much-needed water to the ranchers for irrigating their pastures and crops.  An added benefit of the dam is that, when full, it holds enough water to keep the Culebra running well for 2 or 3 years of extended drought.

Even when the reservoir dried up during a long drought in the 1960’s the creek continued flowing due to springs that flow into the creek directly below the dam.

During the current drought the reservoir has been drawn down to about 30% of capacity, which is about enough water for another year unless we get some water from run-off in the reservoir this spring.  The recent data shows the drainage has over 100% of normal snow pack and forecasters predict above-normal precipitation for March and April.  This means there should be a decent run-off thus increasing the water volume in Sanchez Reservoir, ensuring good flows in the Culebra for the next couple of years.

This is good news for the customers of the Solitary Angler since it has become our most popular fishery after Van Beacham leased over 7 miles of this gem starting over 10 years ago.  For its size the Culebra produces very large rainbows, cutbows and browns.  Many of our clients and members of the Solitary Angling Club think it’s one of the best small streams in the country, public or private, for combining large fish, spectacular scenery and complete solitude.  The Culebra is divided into 6 sections and the Solitary Angler allows only one party per day, per section and each section receives a minimum of 2 days of rest per week.  To fish our private water you must book a Solitary Angler guide or be a member of the Solitary Angling Club.  Because of its exclusivity, it’s important to book early to ensure the dates you want to fish are available.

Solitary Angling Club Memberships Available

The Solitary Angling Club is increasing its membership in 2003 from 30 members to 40 members and will be accepting applications for new members through April 2003.  I started the SAC over 15 years ago after leasing several private waters in New Mexico and eventually, in Colorado.  My goal has been to seek out private water that has unique qualities, like the Culebra and lease them from the owners exclusively for my guided trips and SAC members.  Currently I have leases on the Cimarron River (the “Holy Water”) in New Mexico, the Culebra Creek in Colorado and the Smith’s Fk. in Wyoming.  The purpose is to ensure that clients and members have “Quality Flyfishing Without the Crowds” for years to come.  Qualified members are given access to fish at the prescribed locations as often as they wish, on a reservation basis.  In the past very few members have fallen out and most renew every year because they know it’s the most exclusive club offering the finest fishing in the region and the waters I lease are strictly managed to minimize pressure, preserve and enhance habitat and improve the fishery.

For more information on the Solitary Angling Club or to receive an application call or email the Solitary Angler.

Big Fish, No Crowds!

If you like Flyfishing big, western rivers for trophy trout, you’re not alone.  In fact most big western rivers are so popular that you can’t escape the waders, floaters, guides and local thrashers to save your life.  But, what if I told you there was a fabulous, big western tailwater river less than 3 hours from an International Airport where the cutthroats, rainbows and browns average over 3.5 pounds, the hatches are prolific and you see more wildlife than people.  There is such a place!  It’s the Green River below Fontenelle Dam and the Solitary Angler has been guiding there longer than anyone.

Not to be mistaken by the Green River below Flaming Gorge Reservoir, this section of the Green runs through the Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge in southwest Wyoming.  The river itself is a desert oasis harboring an amazing array of wildlife including moose, deer, antelope, beavers, otters, birds of prey and migratory waterfowl, including endangered trumpeter swans.  The trout are not as plentiful as they are below Flaming Gorge but they are larger due to the richness of the water and tremendous bug population.

The Solitary Angler guides clients on the Green River usually starting in July, after runoff, and continuing through October each year.  We do float or wade trips on the river but even when floating we get out and wade the best areas because the fish hold in very specific places. Their elusiveness and selectivity in feeding makes a guide invaluable when trying to find the lunkers that inhabit this section of the Green.

Large dries work well July through mid-August when stoneflies and sometimes, cicada bring some big fish to the surface.  August through September brings blizzard hatches of evening caddis and enormous clouds of morning tricos.  From late September through October fall baetis blanket the water, enticing giant gulping trout to the surface, while browns and kokanee salmon begin spawning.

Not far from the Green are several tributaries flowing out of the Wyoming Range, providing ample opportunities for catching nice trout on dry flies, all without the crowds.  Near our base town of Kemmerer, Wyoming are two of the best streams in the region, the Ham’s Fork and the Smith’s Fork and the Solitary Angler has access to several miles of private water on them.

The Ham’s Fork is a deluxe little tailwater, which snakes its way through willow thickets creating long foam-lines, flowing into deep pools and undercut banks that hold numerous large rainbows and browns 16 to 20 inches.  Baetis and midges hatch daily giving anglers excellent dry fly opportunities.

The Smith’s Fork is located about an hour from Kemmerer near Cokeville, Wyoming and until recently, was the only major stream still holding a sustained population of the rare and threatened Bonneville Cutthroat Trout.  The Solitary Angler leases over 4 miles of this jewel of a stream and has access to another 5 miles of private water.  The river is a classic freestone stream running through a beautiful valley of working ranches and offer excellent dry fly fishing for cuts and browns 12 to 16 inches, some larger.

Most of our clients stay at the Clark Country B&B, situated right on the Smith’s Fork when fishing there.  The remodeled ranch house is perfect for small groups of 2 to 6 anglers and the hosts are also the owners and operators of the ranch creating a feeling of rustic authenticity that our guests love.  Dinners can be provided or there is a full kitchen in the B&B for your personal use.

This year the Solitary Angler is running a Five Day Special to introduce our clients to the great, unknown fishing available in southwest Wyoming.  It’s easy to fly into Salt Lake International Airport and from there it’s only a little over 2 hours Kemmerer, Wyoming where there are accommodations and restaurants.  From Kemmerer, it’s less than 30 minutes to the Ham’s Fk., 40 minutes to the Green and 1 hour to the Smith’s Fk. and the Clark Country B&B.  From the B&B it’s a couple of hours back to Salt Lake making this a very convenient package.
