Winter fly fishing
Taos has some of the best winter fly fishing in the state. In case you diddnt know the Lower Red River is the major spawning tributary for brown trout and cut bows from the Rio Grande. Every November thousands and thousands of trout move thier way from the Rio Grande twords their winter home in the Red River. The Brown trout move in first followed by the Cut-Bows. Almost over night the average size trout in the Red River goes up from 10 to 12'' to 18 to 22''. It is a sight to behold. Winter fly fishing on the Red River is outstanding. What makes it so exciting is the opportunity to sight fish all winter long for giant trout in a small river. The river may become muddy after snowy or rainy days, but searching with egg paterns and midges drifted deep into the Reds larger holes will still produce results all winter long. On warmer days, you can also find some excellent winter fly fishing on Culebra Creek. The behometh trout of the culebra feed actively on midges and baetis and can be found gently sipping tiny bugs on warmer days all winter long. For the advanced caster looking for a winter fly fishing challenge, the culebra winter hatches might be for you. The Rio Grande itself can produce some fine winter fly fishing opportunities. Coined "the snow fly hatch", winter midges come off in swarms , especially on snowy or cloudy still days. Pilar, John Dunn, and the remote parts of the canyon can produce some fine winter days of fly fishing, if you are lucky.
